Our Guest Speaker on May 4 was Leonie Brogan from Leprosy Australia Mission. Leonie presented us with some sobering statistics on leprosy - a disease which the vast majority of Australians believe is no longer a significant problem.
And yet, every two minutes somewhere in the world someone is diagnosed with the disease, and the latest WHO figures estimate that up to 5 million people have been left disabled by leprosy. It was surprising to learn that leprosy still exists in Australia, although the number of new cases is less than 10 per year.
Leonie will be visiting Timor Leste in the near future to assist local people in the treatment and support of leprosy which is endemic in the country.
